| Apollo killed the serpent Python |
In Greek mythology, Apollo-sun-god-kill with his bow the terrible serpent Python, near a cave where the snake was hiding.
In the tradition Christian-where the snake is not a simple and generic "evil", but it is Satan, that is, one who would oppose God-fight with the reptile and its killing occur multiple times: in the sacred texts, and in the various legends' iconography. In the battle against Satan - "the ancient serpent" - is of great importance to Archangel Michael:
" war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon fought and his angels, but did not prevail and there was no place for them in heaven. The great dragon, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, deceives the whole world, he was cast down to earth with him and his angels were cast . " (AP 12.7 to 9)
